How do you consume social media? Your bedside buddy for some late night FOMO on Facebook? Your early morning Insta selfie so you can tell the world you #wokeuplikethis? A lazy lunch time long read via a LinkedIn connection?
So now consider how you use Social Media for your business. Do you see something on Facebook and decide it would be good to share – so in a carpe diem mode you copy the link, add a post and up she goes?
Social Media and a lot of our online living is very spontaneous. As a business owner, however, it’s always good to have a plan – even if it’s something you’ll deviate from. The plan in itself may be as simple as a checklist that you have for every week – Make a video – check; Post a quote – check; Share a link – check; Write a blog post – check;
The main thing is that when you take on social media marketing for your business, then MAKE A PLAN. Don’t market in social media the way you consume social media. Have a plan and, as with any plan, leave room to be spontaneous in your engagement with your community.
So how to get started?
What I love about Social Media is that the rules for engagement are essentially the same as they are for any marketing activity. The jargon may be slightly different and the tools are new and the reach… okay the reach is steroid levels… but the rest is pretty much the same as applies for traditional marketing or even what used to be called ‘running a business’.
